Default Canon EOS 7D

It looks like there will soon be another HDSLR to consider: The Canon EOS 7D. The press release is apparently already out in Chinese. The official English version should be out soon.

http://www.canonrumors.com/2009/08/e...ase/#more-2538

Highlights include 24/25/30p 1080, 720 and SD with manual control on a crop sensor. We will need to wait to find out about aliasing, rolling shutter latency, and manual audio gain. Certainly, it won't have 180 burst or RAW recording, so it's no Scarlet killer.

If the specs are correct, there's no way that the more expensive 5D2 won't be updated to include 24/25p, if not a 720p mode. I'd rather have a crop sensor @ 24/25/30p than FF @ 30p only - especially since the 7D should cost significantly less than the 5D.

Depending on the price, the 7D could be a real GH1 and D90 killer.

We will know more when the official press release is circulated...

Higher DR & better codec would be sweet. Sounds Like a dream. Does anyone remember a digital film canister, which was touted years ago, like a cassette you just insert into a 35mm camera(how it was supposed to record the sound who knows?), that thing was hushed up a long time ago, or just a 35mm digital film back for the right price, One Day maybe, but if these things keep falling in price they wont be needed.

I believe the 5d can't get 24p no matter what, unless you physically change the sensor. Something to do with the clock speed of the chip. Not 100% on that though.

Wonder when it will come out. Do they typically announce way ahead of shipping dates? This might be a good option for an interim camera.

It looks like it will be at least a grand more than the GH1, so I don't know if it's really going to kill anything, except the 5D, if anything.

What's the actual release date anyway. With scarlet in November it hardly seems worth it even as an wait for scarlet camera.

I thought we would get an update in November, I guess it'd be a pleasant surprise if we could get one then, but I don't think that sounds very likely.

Right, "First Looks" is possibly in november. Ship date, free of bugs, is sometime in 2010 I think.

For many people, it looks the Canon 7D would make a great interim camera. It has many short comings as a professional tool, but that's not to say it can't be used for a wide variety of filmmaking. And for less thank $2K, it seems like a no-brainer even though it has something like a s35mm "brain".

If it did RAW, had an articulating LCD, xlr ports, timecode, then it would be a real contender rather than something just for here and now (but you should always buy a camera for the here and now. Especially now.)

For Canon, actual release date is one or two monts after press release. But I imagine the demand for this camera will be very, very high. So you might have to wait a few months to get your hands on one.

I am excited about this camera, and will probably get one if the price is low enough. The Dual Digic 4 processors should make this baby zing. I was considering a GH1, but the low bitrate on the GH1 causes nasty artifacts in many shots.
