Ok, so my 1000W Open-face is always burning my diffusion sheets... They are made of nylon believe it or not.:banned:

I use them even closer to the lamp because spill is a bitch! But I wanna buy something that will not burn a hole in 5 minutes of use.

The 500W is fine, I can leave it on for minutes and it will not burn gels or diffusers. But the 1000W is just too much heat.

Would a Rosco diffusion sheet take that much heat from this close and not burn to the ground? :bath:
Help me out guys.

Are you using toughspun? I have had no problems with that. If i forget about a light that's been focused then I'll usually lose a gel though.

No... These are nylon diffusers that came with the frames.

I've never used Rosco diffusion sheets.

Tough spun is spun glass mat. Much more heat resistant, but a different quality of diffusion. Might try some different grades of mylar frost or tracing paper available at graphic arts supply stores too. Paper can be more heat resistant than nylon, but if it hits 451f degrees it will flambeau.

I thought the Rosco Tough Spun was Heat resistant polyester?

Whilst on the subject I have a thing for Mylar Lightbreak...gobo diffusion. There is some fantastic breakup patterned sheets. Really does add texture to the light.

It looks like if you want to be that close to the light you need tough spun. If you can be further away you can use the gels. Sheets of plastic and extreme heat don't really mix unfortunately :(

Burned through some of my daylight correction gel the other day because of that.

I agree with Matt, if for whatever reason you have to put the gel that close, use tought spun, I often end up using 1/4 spun folded 8 times :) on lamps 2k and under and never had any problem.

I agree with using tough spun, thought I typically use 1/2 spun folded once or twice. If you are experiencing a lot of spill Pietro, use black wrap like a mofo. Almost all of my setups have included black wrap all over my lights to prevent spill, ESPECIALLY, my open-faced tungsten lights.
